Age limits trip up more Nigerian recruitment applicants than any other factor. Here is a side-by-side of every major uniformed service, by cadre.

How age is calculated
Age is calculated on the closing date of the application window, not the date you apply. Some services use the date of oral/physical screening; check each cycle's advert for the specific cut-off.
Documents the agency uses to confirm your age
Agencies verify age against (in order of preference):
- Birth certificate (NPC-issued)
- Declaration of age (sworn affidavit)
- SSCE/NECO result (date of birth entry)
- NIN
If the age on your birth certificate, SSCE and NIN disagree, you will be disqualified. Fix any mismatches before applying - a sworn affidavit of change-of-age takes a magistrate about 30 minutes.
Why some services allow older applicants
The paramilitary agencies (NSCDC, NCoS, FFS, Customs, FRSC, NDLEA) accept applicants up to 35 for degree entry because their roles rely more on training transferable from other professions. Military services (Army, Navy, Air Force) cap earlier because of physical conditioning requirements.
What to do if you're above the age limit
- Many parastatals (NAFDAC, FIRS, NNPC, NLNG) have higher caps - up to 40 or no cap for senior roles.
- Private sector jobs on openings have no age limit.
- Consider the Federal Civil Service which caps at 40 for most cadres.
