How to Write an Application Letter for a Job in Nigeria

A 2026 guide with the exact structure Nigerian hiring managers expect, plus two full samples you can adapt.

A good application letter does one job: it convinces the hiring manager to open your CV. In Nigeria, where a single posting can draw 300+ applicants, a sharp letter is often the difference between landing an interview and being ignored.

This guide gives you the exact structure Nigerian employers expect in 2026, two full sample letters you can rewrite in 15 minutes, and the small mistakes that get otherwise strong candidates binned.

The 6-part structure every Nigerian application letter needs

  1. Your address + date (top right, or top left for emails - either is fine)
  2. The employer's address (name, title, company, address)
  3. A specific subject line (e.g. "Application for the position of Accountant")
  4. Opening paragraph - why you are writing, where you saw the role
  5. Body paragraphs (1-2) - your strongest matching qualifications, with specifics
  6. Closing paragraph + sign-off - call to action and polite close

Keep the whole thing to one page. Hiring managers skim; walls of text get skimmed past.

Sample 1: Fresh graduate applying for an entry-level role

Subject: Application for the Entry-Level Marketing Assistant Role (Ref: MA-2026-14)

Dear Mrs Adeyemi,

I am writing to apply for the Marketing Assistant position advertised on openings.ng on 1 October 2026. I graduated from the University of Lagos in July with a Second Class Upper in Mass Communication, and I believe my coursework in digital marketing and the social-media campaign I led for the Faculty's end-of-year showcase (reaching 12,000 Instagram impressions on a zero budget) match what Zemi Media is looking for.

During my NYSC year I worked with Prime Advertising in Ikeja, where I drafted copy for three FMCG clients and co-ran their monthly performance report. I am familiar with Canva, Meta Ads Manager, and basic Google Analytics.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to the Zemi Media team. I am available for an interview at your convenience and can be reached on 0801 234 5678 or at my email below.

Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely, Chiamaka Nnamdi

Sample 2: Mid-career candidate switching sectors

Subject: Application for the Operations Manager role, Abuja

Dear Mr Bello,

I am applying for the Operations Manager position at Hazel Foods, advertised on openings.ng. I have spent the last five years running operations at a 40-person logistics firm in Lagos, where I cut average dispatch time by 32% and introduced the KPI dashboard the directors now use for monthly reviews.

While I have no formal food-sector background, the operational pattern (procurement to warehouse to last-mile) is the same, and I have been reading your quarterly reports to understand the specifics of cold-chain logistics in Northern Nigeria. I would bring a strong track record on cost control and team management from day one.

I would welcome a conversation. I can be reached on 0802 998 7700 or at the email below.

Yours sincerely, Tunde Ogunleye

Small mistakes that get strong candidates ignored

  • Generic "Dear Sir / Madam" when the ad names a hiring contact. Address them by name.
  • Repeating your CV verbatim. The letter is a sales pitch, not a resume dump.
  • No specifics. "I am hardworking and reliable" tells the reader nothing. "I cut dispatch time by 32%" does.
  • Attachments the ad didn't ask for. If they asked for a CV, send a CV. Don't send transcripts, certificates and a portfolio zip unprompted.
  • A free Gmail address like naijababe95@. Use [email protected] or similar.

Formatting checklist

  • One page, 11-12pt Calibri / Arial / Times New Roman
  • Save as PDF (never .docx - formatting breaks on the recruiter's screen)
  • File name: Firstname Lastname - Application - Role.pdf
  • Email subject: match the ad's reference exactly

What to do after you send it

Submit through openings and keep a record of the role, date, and reference. If you have not heard back within 2 weeks, a single short follow-up email is appropriate. Never send more than one.

Browse live roles on openings.ng/jobs and apply direct, with no fees.
