Nigerian job ads throw "hybrid", "remote" and "on-site" around interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and the differences matter when you accept an offer. Here is what each actually means, plus the small-print signals in an ad that reveal which one it really is.
On-site
You work from the employer's office, every working day. In Nigeria this is still the default for roughly 70% of advertised roles. Pros: clear separation between work and home, easier onboarding, better internal visibility. Cons: Lagos / Abuja commute realities.
Small-print signals in the ad:
- "Must be resident in Lagos / Abuja / [city]"
- Specific office address
- "Must be available 8am to 5pm"
Hybrid
You split your week between the office and home. The split varies - 2 days office + 3 days home, 3 and 2, or alternating weeks - and the ad should say which. If it does not, ask on the first interview. "Hybrid" with no stated split often ends up being "office whenever your manager wants you in", which is really on-site with extra steps.
Small-print signals in the ad:
- "Hybrid - 3 days in office"
- "Flexible working with office presence required"
- Hazard sign: "Hybrid working considered" or "hybrid optional" - this usually means on-site in practice.
Remote (within Nigeria)
You work from home anywhere in Nigeria. The employer may still require you to be based in a specific state for tax or power / internet reasons, so read carefully. Pros: no commute, flexibility. Cons: isolation, poor internet in some areas, no office equipment unless provided.
Small-print signals in the ad:
- "Fully remote"
- "Work from home"
- "Must have reliable power and 10Mbps+ internet"
Remote (international)
You work from Nigeria for a foreign employer - typically paid in USD, GBP or EUR. This is the fastest-growing segment of Nigerian hiring but comes with trade-offs: no local labour protections, you handle your own tax, time-zone overlap requirements can be brutal.
Small-print signals in the ad:
- Salary quoted in USD / GBP / EUR
- "Must overlap with EST / PST / UK hours"
- Employer is a US / European / Canadian company with no Nigerian entity
How to pick
- Need structure, early career, want visibility? On-site or hybrid-heavy.
- Have 3+ years and strong focus habits? Hybrid or fully remote.
- Want foreign-currency pay and can handle solo work? Remote international.
