The Labour Act sets a statutory minimum; your contract usually specifies more. We show both.
How notice periods work in Nigeria
The Labour Act sets a statutory notice sliding scale based on tenure: 1 day for <3 months, 1 week for 3 months-2 years, 2 weeks for 2-5 years, 1 month for 5+ years. Your contract typically specifies more - most Nigerian mid-level and senior contracts use 1-3 months.
Notice must be mutual - if your contract requires 3 months from you, the employer also owes 3 months (or pay in lieu). If they terminate without giving the required notice, you're entitled to be paid the notice period as if you served it.
