In Nigeria, "CV" and "resume" are usually interchangeable - most employers will accept either when they ask for one. But the two terms do mean different documents in formal usage, and when you apply to US employers the distinction matters.
The quick answer
- CV: 2-4 pages. Comprehensive history of your education, employment and achievements. UK, Nigerian, European convention.
- Resume: 1-2 pages. Short, tailored summary of your most relevant experience for a specific role. American convention.
Side-by-side comparison
| Attribute | CV | Resume |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2-4 pages (unlimited in academia) | 1-2 pages |
| Content | Comprehensive - every role, every qualification | Selective - only what matches the role |
| Updates | Updated once a year | Tailored per application |
| Used in | UK, Nigeria, EU, Australia, academia worldwide | US, Canada (private sector) |
| Covers | Education, work, publications, awards, hobbies, references | Work experience, skills, education only |
| Objective statement | Common at the top | Replaced by professional summary |
| Includes photo? | Historically yes, trending to no | Never |
Which should you send?
- Applying to a Nigerian employer - either term is accepted. Send a 2-4 page CV. Call it whatever the advert calls it.
- Applying to a UK, EU or Australian employer - send a CV, keep it to two pages.
- Applying to a US employer - send a resume, one page if under 10 years' experience, two if above.
- Applying for an academic post - always a full CV, no page limit, including publications and conference presentations.
The real difference
Format matters less than fit. A tailored two-page document that proves you can do a specific role beats a four-page generic CV every time. The best thing you can do is keep both versions ready - a comprehensive CV for Nigerian / UK / EU applications and a tightened one-page resume for US applications.
Rename on upload
Match the file name to whatever the advert asks for. If they say "resume", your file is Firstname Lastname Resume.pdf. If they say "CV", it's Firstname Lastname CV.pdf. Small detail, but it signals you read the brief.
