Who pays a 13th month in Nigeria?
13th-month bonus is not statutory in Nigeria - it's contractual. Most oil & gas majors, big banks, and multinational corporates pay it (usually in December). Startups and SMEs often don't. Some employers pay pro-rata for less than a full year of service; others require 12 full months before you qualify.
Tax treatment matters: 13th month gets added to your December gross for PAYE purposes, which usually pushes you into a higher band that month. The effective tax rate on the bonus can be 24% or more even if your regular effective rate is 20%.
