Theodom Integrated Investments Limited - Our client in the aluminium industry is recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Head of Glass Department

Location: Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: Production Manager
Supervises: Glass Cutters, Glass Handlers

Main duties
Glass cutting and processing:

  • Read cutting lists and drawings, and confirm sizes before any cut is made.
  • Plan each cut to use the full sheet and keep offcuts and waste low.
  • Make sure edges are worked, holes are drilled and notches are made to the right size.
  • Check that cutting tables, tools and lifting equipment are clean and working each morning.
  • Enforce safety rules on gloves, arm guards, safety boots and correct lifting at all times.

Glass stock management:

  • Count all glass stock every week and check that it matches the stock record in Odoo.
  • Store sheets upright on the right racks, labelled by type, thickness and colour, so nothing gets damaged.
  • Track usable offcuts and use them first on small pieces.
  • Watch stock against upcoming jobs and raise a purchase request to Procurement before stock runs low.
  • Receive glass deliveries, check them against the delivery note and report any breakage or wrong items the same day.

Quality checking:

  • Check every cut piece for correct size, square corners, clean edges, scratches and chips.
  • Stop any faulty piece before it leaves the glass section.
  • Check incoming glass for defects before it goes onto the racks.
  • Keep a simple record of rejected pieces and the reason for each one.
  • Find out why mistakes happen and fix the cause, not just the piece.

Team management:

  • Give glass cutters and handlers their daily work and check it is done on time.
  • Train new team members on cutting, handling and safety before they work alone.
  • Watch how each person works and correct bad habits on the spot.
  • Tell the Production Manager when a team member needs more training than can be given on the floor.
  • Keep attendance and report discipline issues to the Production Manager.

Reporting:

  • Give the Production Manager a short daily update on work done, delays and problems.
  • Send the Production Manager and Inventory Manager a weekly stock report on what is low and what is ordered. Report breakage and waste every month, with the cost and the main causes.
  • Warn the Production Manager at once if any project is at risk of running out of glass.
  • Raise any other problem that will delay production straight away.

Experience and knowledge required

  • At least 5 years of hands on experience cutting architectural glass, ideally for aluminium windows, doors or curtainwall.
  • At least 3 years leading a team of glass cutters or handlers.
  • Good knowledge of clear, tinted, reflective, laminated, tempered and double glazed glass, and what each one can and cannot do.
  • Able to read shop drawings and cutting lists, and do measurements and simple calculations without mistakes.
  • Experience counting stock, keeping stock records and knowing when to reorder.
  • Uses Excel and computer stock systems such as Odoo with confidence for stock records and reports.
  • Experience setting up and running digital glass cutting tables, as well as computer controlled edging and drilling machines.
  • A trade certificate, OND or NABTEB in a technical field is an advantage, but proven skill matters more.

The right person for this job:

  • Measures twice and rejects poor work, even when the line is waiting.
  • Tells the Production Manager about a problem the same day, instead of hiding it or hoping it goes away.
  • Stops a team member who skips safety gear or lifts glass the wrong way, every time.
  • Writes things down: stock counts, rejects and deliveries are on record, not just in their head.
  • Raises the purchase request early, without waiting for someone to ask.
  • Works on the floor beside the team, shows them how to do the job right, then checks they do it.
