What is total compensation and why does it matter
Base salary is a misleading anchor for job offers. Two Nigerian offers at NGN 900k base can differ by NGN 3 million per year once you factor in signing bonus, annual bonus target, equity, HMO family plan, learning budget, transport allowance and lunch. The offer with the lower base sometimes wins on total cash-equivalent.
This equaliser lets you dump every component into one form and get one honest annual number. Signing bonus is amortised over the vesting/clawback window. Equity is treated as annualised value - if you have a vesting schedule, divide by the years. Family HMO for a spouse + 2 kids is worth NGN 400-600k per year in Nigeria at market rates.
Use this before you accept, before you counter-offer, and when you compare two offers head-to-head with the Two-Offer Comparator.
