Where can you go from here?

Pick your current role. We show typical progressions with expected years of experience and the salary uplift at each step.

How Nigerian career progression really works

The typical path from Backend Engineer looks something like: Senior Backend Engineer around year 3, Staff/Principal or first-time Engineering Manager around year 6-8, and Head of Engineering by year 10+. That's the median - individual paths vary widely based on company size, technology stack and market timing.

This tool combines a curated adjacency map for the top ~10 role families we see in Nigeria (Backend, Frontend, PM, Data, Design, Sales, Marketing, HR, Finance, Ops) with the salary corpus to show the pay uplift at each step. When a role isn't in the curated map, we fall back to a seniority-based progression (Junior - Mid - Senior - Lead - Head of).

Use the years-of-experience number as market median, not a promotion promise. Some make Head of X in 6 years, others take 15. The salary uplifts are more reliable - they reflect what current market rates actually pay at each rung.

Frequently asked questions

How are progressions defined?

Curated for the top ~10 role families based on what we see in the corpus. Roles outside these families fall back to a Senior / Manager / Head-of progression. Years are market medians drawn from tenure signals across postings.

Should I go into management or stay IC?

Depends on what you enjoy doing daily. IC paths (Staff/Principal) often reach similar comp to first-line management, without the people-management overhead. If you enjoy building people-systems, management. If you enjoy shipping product, IC.

What's the fastest way to jump pay?

Change companies every 2-3 years. Internal promotions typically add 10-15%, external moves at the same seniority often add 20-40%. Stay too long in one place and your compensation drifts below market for your level.
